Assisting Your Aging Parent in Obtaining Adequate Nutrition

Adequate Nutrition Group

As individuals age, it is not uncommon for their food intake to decrease. This could be due to reduced physical activity, resulting in lower caloric needs, or it could be due to other factors such as difficulty chewing, reduced sense of taste or smell, medication side effects, or social isolation.

Why Nutrition Matters for Older People

Good nutrition is essential for maintaining health, energy levels, and quality of life as we age. Malnutrition in older people is more common than many people realise and can lead to serious health consequences including increased risk of infection, slower wound healing, muscle weakness, and falls.

Tips for Supporting Good Nutrition

  • Offer small, frequent meals rather than three large meals
  • Make mealtimes social occasions when possible
  • Prepare foods that are easy to chew and swallow
  • Ensure adequate hydration throughout the day
  • Consult a GP or dietitian if you have concerns about weight loss
  • Consider fortified foods or nutritional supplements if recommended
